According to legend, the origins of Fumone date back to the time of Tarquinius the Superb who would have taken refuge there after being expelled from Rome. In 1295 Pope Celestine V was imprisoned in the Castle by order of his successor Boniface VIII, who now feared authority and a possible return to the pontifical pontifical. The historic center of Fumone is located on a hill located between the mountainous reliefs of the Ernici and Lepini mountains.
